About

Epoxy Toughness With the Convenience of a Water-Based Coating

Every concrete coating or resurfacing system depends on its bond to the slab underneath, which is why so many begin with an epoxy primer. EC-11 handles that first coat, and it can also serve as the sealer or finish coat, all without giving up the easy handling of a water-based product.

There's no induction time, so EC-11 goes down as soon as it's mixed. Thinned with water, it soaks into the slab to seal it and help prevent pinholes in the coats that follow. At full strength, it cures to a hard, medium-gloss film that stands up to automotive fluids and household cleaners. Tools and spills clean up with soap and water before it cures. EC-11 Clear gives concrete a natural look, letting its color and variation show through without darkening the surface, while pigmented colors give a solid finish.

On interior floors, EC-11 works as a medium-duty concrete sealer and topcoat. Outdoors, it's the primer in the 11-10 Standard Finish and 11-10 Custom Finish systems. There it bonds the SC-10 Acrylic Topcoat to patios, walkways, driveways, pool decks, and worn stamped concrete.

Choosing Your Color

Color can vary between products and sheens, so the colors shown here are for reference only. We can provide actual color samples of Westcoat products on request, and we recommend applying a sample on site before beginning your project.

    How-To

Application Instruction Overview for Westcoat EC-11

IMPORTANT! Before You Begin: Review the complete Westcoat EC-11 Technical Data Sheet (TDS) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS), linked above, along with the specification for the Westcoat system you're installing. The information below is a brief overview and does not replace the manufacturer's complete application instructions. When using EC-11 as a sealer or topcoat, apply a test area on site to confirm color and finish before beginning the full application.

Step 1 – Inspect and Prepare the Surface

    • Surface must be structurally sound, clean, dry, and free of grease, paint, oil, dust, curing agents, laitance, or anything else that will prevent adhesion
    • Concrete should be at least 2,500 PSI and porous or rough enough for the product to soak in
    • Allow new concrete to cure a minimum of 28 days
    • Test the slab for efflorescence, moisture, and hydrostatic pressure, and contact the manufacturer before application if moisture emissions exceed 5 lbs/1,000 sq ft/24 hours or RH exceeds 75%
    • Prepare the surface according to the system specification, and avoid shot blasting or scarifying too aggressively, leaving grind marks, or grinding too smooth

    Step 2 – Mix EC-11

    • Premix Part A and Part B separately
    • For pigmented EC-11, box all Part B containers before mixing for color consistency, since the colorant is in Part B
    • Mix 2 parts A with 1 part B by volume with a low-speed (400–600 rpm) drill for 3–4 minutes, scraping the sides and bottom of the container
    • Remove the mixed material from the container and spread it onto the floor right away
    • Thin with water up to 50%, depending on the use

Step 3 – Apply the Prime Coat

    • Spray or squeegee thinned EC-11 onto the surface and backroll
    • Apply evenly and work it into the surface to seal and avoid pinholes
    • Apply thinned EC-11 at a maximum of 5 mils, and do not allow it to puddle

Step 4 – Apply the Coating or Sealer

    • Apply within 24 hours after the prime coat
    • Cut in the edges with a brush, then pour the remaining material near the cut-in area
    • Spread evenly with a trowel or squeegee and back roll with a ¼ inch nap non-shedding roller
    • Apply 1 to 2 coats, depending on the look, thickness, and chemical and abrasion resistance needed

Step 5 – Recoat and Cure

    • Recoat as soon as the surface is dry to the touch, in 1 to 4 hours, but no later than 24 hours
    • Allow 6 hours for light foot traffic, 24 hours for normal traffic, and 72 hours for vehicle traffic at 70°F and 50% humidity
    • Remove uncured material with soap and warm water, and cured material mechanically or with an environmentally safe solvent

    Installation Limitations

    • For professional use only
    • Do not apply below 50°F or above 90°F
    • Use as a primer or topcoat on interior surfaces, and on exterior surfaces only as a primer sheltered from UV
    • EC-11 must cure a minimum of 24 hours before contact with water
    • Be aware of the pot life of mixed material
    • Do not allow Westcoat products to freeze

    FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Westcoat EC-11

What's the difference between EC-11 Clear and pigmented EC-11?

EC-11 Clear dries to a clear, glossier film that lets the concrete's natural color show through, while pigmented EC-11 gives a solid-color, lower-sheen finish in nine colors. Double-check which one your project calls for, since pigmented EC-11 used where clear is specified will change the look of the floor.

Should I use EC-11 Clear or pigmented EC-11 under a clear sealer?

Either one works, depending on the look you want. Choose EC-11 Clear if you want the natural color and variation of the concrete, or of a stained surface, to show through the finished floor. Choose pigmented EC-11 if you want a solid color under the sealer.

    Can EC-11 be used outdoors?

Yes, as a primer that's sheltered from UV. In the 11-10 Standard Finish and 11-10 Custom Finish systems, EC-11 primes patios, walkways, driveways, and pool decks before the SC-10 Acrylic Topcoat goes on. As a sealer or topcoat, EC-11 is for interior surfaces.

How soon can I walk or drive on an EC-11 floor?

At about 70°F and 50% humidity, allow 6 hours for light foot traffic, 24 hours for normal traffic, and 72 hours for vehicles. Cooler temperatures slow drying, and EC-11 needs at least 24 hours of cure before it gets wet.

How long should I wait between coats of EC-11?

Apply the next coat as soon as the previous one is dry to the touch, usually in about 1 to 4 hours, but no later than 24 hours. If you miss that window, sand or abrade the surface and wipe it with a solvent such as acetone before recoating. Those times are based on 70 degrees and 50% humidity, so expect the wait to run longer in cool weather and shorter in hot weather.

    How chemical resistant is EC-11?

It holds up well to gasoline, brake and transmission fluid, bleach, household cleaners, alcohols, and food spills like ketchup and red wine. For results against other chemicals, see the full chemical resistance chart in the EC-11 Technical Data Sheet.

How much EC-11 do I need?

Plan on approximately 300 to 600 sq ft per gallon, depending on film thickness and the porosity and texture of the surface. If you're installing a Westcoat system, use the coverage rate in that system's specification, since primer rates vary from system to system.

    • Epoxy Toughness, Water-Based Convenience | Cures to a hard, durable finish, yet goes down right after mixing and cleans up with soap and water
    • Primer, Sealer, or Topcoat | Thin it with water for a penetrating prime coat, or apply it full strength as a medium-gloss concrete sealer
    • Clear or Pigmented | EC-11 Clear primes and seals without changing the color of the concrete, and nine pigmented colors give the floor a solid, uniform finish
    • Fast Recoats | Ready for the next coat in 1 to 4 hours, so multi-coat jobs can often be finished in a single day
    • Resists Fluids and Heat | Unaffected by gasoline, brake fluid, bleach, and household cleaners, with heat resistance to 180°F
