Westcoat TC-73 Epoxy Mortar Sand | 50 lb Bag
About
Trowel-Grade Sand for High-Build Epoxy Mortar Floors and Cove
Westcoat TC-73 Epoxy Mortar Sand is the aggregate that turns 100% solids epoxy into a trowelable mortar. Mixed at 1½ gallons of EC-36 100% Solids Epoxy per 100 pounds of sand, it forms the high-strength, impact-resistant mortar base in the Westcoat Epoxy Mortar Standard System. The same ratio with EC-76 Cove Gel makes the aggregate coat for troweled epoxy cove at the wall.
The sand is sub-angular, meaning its grains are angular with slightly rounded edges, and it's graded specifically for troweled resinous flooring. On the floor, the mortar base is troweled into the primer at 3/16 to ¼ inch, then sealed and topcoated with EC-34 Pigmented Epoxy Topcoat. The Epoxy Mortar Standard System is used in manufacturing plants, warehouses, commercial kitchens, and service areas with forklift traffic.

Application Instruction Overview for Westcoat TC-73
IMPORTANT! Before You Begin: Review the complete Westcoat TC-73 Technical Data Sheet (TDS) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS), linked above, along with the Epoxy Mortar Standard or Epoxy Cove System specification, before installation. The information below is a brief overview and does not replace the manufacturer's complete application instructions.
Step 1 – Prepare and Prime the Surface
- Prepare, patch, and prime the surface as specified in the system specification

- If you can't trowel into wet primer, broadcast sand into the EC-12 Clear and let it dry before applying the mortar
Step 2 – Mix the Mortar
- Mix 2 parts A with 1 part B (by volume) of EC-36 or EC-76 for 3–4 minutes before adding sand
- Combine 1½ gallons of mixed EC-36 or EC-76 with 100 pounds of TC-73
- For smaller cove batches, blend 48 ounces of mixed EC-76 with approximately 25 pounds of TC-73
- Mix with a mechanical mixer until all of the sand is completely and evenly coated
- With EC-76, only prepare what you can use in 20 minutes at 70°F
Step 3 – Apply the Mortar
- Floors: Trowel into place at 45–50 sq ft per mix at ¼ inch or 60–65 sq ft per mix at 3/16 inch
- Lubricate the trowel with a solvent-dampened rag as needed to keep tools clean
- Cove: Apply the EC-76 mortar over the wet EC-76 tack coat, troweling onto the wall and stopping at the cove cap
- Smooth and finish the cove with a cove trowel, using water or solvent to lubricate the trowel
- Let the cove aggregate coat dry overnight, then apply the EC-76 fill coat before topcoating

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions About Westcoat TC-73 Epoxy Mortar Sand
What do I mix TC-73 with?
Mix it with EC-36 100% Solids Epoxy for epoxy mortar floors or EC-76 Cove Gel for cove base, at 1½ gallons of mixed epoxy per 100 pounds of sand.
How much floor does TC-73 cover?
Each mix of 1½ gallons of EC-36 and 100 pounds (two bags) of TC-73 covers 45–50 square feet at ¼ inch or 60–65 square feet at 3/16 inch.
How many bags of TC-73 do I need for a 3-gallon kit of EC-36?
At 1½ gallons per 100 pounds, a 3-gallon EC-36 kit mixes with about 200 pounds of TC-73, or four 50 lb bags.
How much cove does a batch of TC-73 make?
A 1½-gallon kit of EC-76 Cove Gel mixed with 100 pounds of TC-73 makes approximately 120 linear feet of 6" cove. Taller cove or a different profile will change that number.
Can I use a different sand for epoxy cove?
EC-76 Cove Gel can also be used with TC-65 Quartz Sand or silica sand. If you use 20–30 grit silica sand, the resin has to be increased to about 75 pounds of sand per 1½-gallon kit of EC-76.
Is TC-73 the same as TC-65 Quartz Sand?
No. TC-65 is the quartz sand used in Westcoat's Epoxy Mortar Quartz System, which finishes with a clear topcoat. TC-73 is a tan, sub-angular mortar sand used in the Epoxy Mortar Standard System, which is sealed and topcoated with EC-34 Pigmented Epoxy Topcoat.
